Emily was born in Virginia and raised in Maryland. A student of design, history, and style from an early age, she moved to New York City at age 18 to attend New York University. After spending a year studying abroad in Paris she graduated with a B.A. in Art History and French.
She started her design career in the film industry, where she spent several years working in the art department on tv shows and feature films including "The Royal Tenenbaums", “Maid in Manhattan”, “Empire”, “Now and Again”, and "Serendipity".
She shifted her focus to residential interiors in 2003 after completing an interior design program at Parsons the New School for Design and started Purple Martin Interiors in 2006.
She recently relocated to Atlanta, Georgia where she lives in a 1959 ranch house with her family.
