A student of design, history, and style from an early age, her dream was to live in NYC. She moved there at age 18 to attend New York University. After spending a year studying abroad in Paris she graduated with a B.A. in Art History and French. She started her design career in the film industry, where she spent several years working in the art department on tv shows and feature films including "The Royal Tenenbaums", “Maid in Manhattan”, “Empire”, “Now and Again”, and "Serendipity". She shifted her focus to residential interiors in 2003 after completing an interior design program at Parsons the New School for Design and started Purple Martin Interiors in 2006. The Purple Martin (progne subis) is a North American bird. It is the largest of the swallow family and named for its glossy purple feathers. Purple Martins are very particular about their houses. According to early American settlers, Native Americans hollowed out gourds and erected them to give them shelter. Today their survival continues to be dependent on its ability to nest in man-made birdhouses made of wood or aluminum. Purple Martin houses are usually elaborately and specifically constructed, and require annual care and maintenence. To keep a healthy colony of Purple Martins you must spruce up their house every year. The name Purple Martin Interiors is an homage to Emily’s grandmother Peg Klimkiewicz ("Nana") who took great care to maintain the big white Purple Martin house on her property, and who taught Emily about these fascinating birds.
